The only maritime oasis in the Mediterranean basin, an indigenous and community heritage, and once an important centre of agricultural production, the oasis of Gabès is - for these reasons - inscribed on the Unesco tentative list as a mixed site, both natural and cultural. Today, however, this property is in bad shape, victim of an aggressive industrialisation and confronted with evils such as
- Lack of water and salinisation of the soil
- Pollution
- Uncontrolled urbanisation and land fragmentation
All these factors are responsible for the degradation of the land and the decline in yields. How can this situation be remedied? How can we restore this heritage to its former glory and resurrect its environmental function, which is so much in demand by the local residents?
In close partnership with local civil society, concerned with helping the community and its territory, the caravan is looking for a collective synergy capable of strengthening the resilience of the oasis and restoring its integrity. In short, with the help of the oasis inhabitants themselves, starting from the natural resilience of an oasis that is already a thousand years old, we aim to set up a new environmental governance that would help rescue and conserve an exceptional universal asset.
