The archaeological heritage of the coastal zone of South-East Tunisia

The archaeological heritage of the coastal zone of South-East Tunisia

Tunisia is one of the Mediterranean countries with one of the highest densities of archaeological remains, thanks to the immense wealth of its sites dating back to different historical periods. However, it is often admitted that the density of ancient archaeological sites is unequal according to the region and that, unlike the North, North-West and Centre-West, which are characterised by a high density, ancient archaeological sites are rarer in the Centre-East and South-East regions, which were sparsely inhabited in ancient times. In reality, this observation corresponds more to the state of research than to historical reality. In fact, the coastal areas of the Centre-East and South-East are marked by the presence of some of the most extensive archaeological sites with a very important heritage potential. The sites of Bararus, Acholla, Thaenae, Macomades-Minores-Iunci, Gigthis, Zita and Meninx are among the most important in these regions. However, despite the great archaeological potential of these sites, they remain partially excavated and little known. The numerous research and development projects set up in recent years by the INP in partnership with Tunisian universities as well as with international universities and research centres (France, England, Germany) to excavate, restore and develop the archaeological sites of Thaenae, Iunci, Meninx and Zita give hope that these sites will be open to lovers of the ancient archaeological heritage in the years to come.
The SfaxForward project, through its scientific team and thanks to the collaboration with the INP, the AMVPPC, the local and regional authorities as well as the civil society, aims to participate in the enhancement of this rich archaeological heritage and its promotion by different means: audio-visual (documentary films, interactive maps, 3D virtual visits, etc. ), written works (scientific works, guide books, press articles), organisation of visits (caravan of the cultural heritage of the south-eastern coastal zone, open days with associations, schools, colleges and universities), organisation of congresses and symposiums, etc.
